"Supply Backlash" Could Halt Oil's Price Rise
The most recent uptick in crude oil prices "raises several concerns" for 2018, according to analysts at BNP Paribas. "The potential supply backlash, notably by U.S. shale producers, but also in conventional areas like the North Sea, is one of these concerns, as is whether oil producers involved in supply cuts will hold firm in their commitments," the analysts write in a note Monday. Still, in the short-term, synchronized global economic growth and colder weather has strengthened oil demand and helped reduce the overhang in global oil inventories, they say. BNP Paribas has raised its price forecasts for 2018 for both Brent and WTI by $10 a barrel, to average $65 - and $60- a barrel, respectively.
