Oil Prices Mixed as Supply Uncertainty Continues
Oil prices were mixed Thursday after data showed a larger-than-expected decrease in U.S. stockpiles last week but investors continued debating the future of the production-cut deal that has boosted prices.
U.S. crude futures fell $1.17, or 1.7%, to $67.04 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange after ending a five-session losing streak a day earlier. Brent crude, the global benchmark, added 9 cents, or 0.1%, to $77.59 a barrel.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration's closely watched weekly report showed stockpiles decreased by 3.6 million barrels during the week ended May 25, compared with a drop of 300,000 barrels that were expected by traders and analysts surveyed by The Wall Street Journal.
The mixed report comes at a time when market participants have already been anxious about whether the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and other large producers might end coordinated cuts at a meeting next month.
