Australia's Woodside to open Pluto LNG truck-loading facility this month
Australia's largest gas producer Woodside Energy will officially open its LNG truck-loading facility at its Western Australian Pluto plant later this month, the company's chief operations officer Meg O'Neill said in a speech at the Australasian Oil and Gas Exhibition and Conference in Perth Wednesday.
The truck loading facility, which commenced construction in 2018, is planned to provide LNG for distribution to the state's Pilbara, Kimberley and Gascoyne regions.
Woodside made the investment in the truck-loading facility without a secured customer, and in January secured a 15-year agreement with Sheffield Resources for the supply and delivery of 1,950 terajoules/year of LNG to its Thunderbird Mineral Sands Project in northern Western Australia.
"We had a view on the market. We felt that there was always a stand-off between potential buyers and suppliers, and so we moved forward based on our assessment of market demand," Woodside's CEO Peter Coleman said in mid-February.
He noted that while the Sheffield agreement is subject to them going to final investment decision on the Thunderbird project, Woodside is confident and tendering for the trucks to supply it.
Woodside has also participated in joint industry projects to assess the feasibility for LNG to be used as a fuel for bulk carriers transporting iron ore from Pilbara.
"In 2019, we will undertake activities to support FID on an LNG bunkering vessel to supply this market," it said in the annual report.
Coleman said , "on the bunkering side, we are currently out for expressions of interest on a bunkering vessel to supply Dampier Port and/or Port Hedland".
