Norwegian upstream company Aker BP announced an oil and gas discovery estimated at 60 million-130 million barrels of oil equivalent on Tuesday that adds to a run of discoveries in the area and boosts prospects for the Alvheim hub near the Norway-UK border.
In a statement, Aker-BP, a UK-Norwegian joint venture that operates the Alvheim field and has been expanding its holdings in the area, said the new Froskelar find may straddle the two countries' sea border.
It "represents a significant addition to the resource base in the Alvheim area," Aker BP senior vice president for exploration Evy Glorstad-Clark said.
The Alvheim hub, including several satellite fields, produces a relatively light crude shipped to market by shuttle tanker, while gas is sent through the SAGE pipeline to the UK.
The drilling of Froskelar was prompted by the Frosk oil discovery in the same area in February 2018, estimated at 30 million-60 million boe, Aker BP said, adding it plans further exploration and appraisal drilling in the area.
