Saudi Aramco lifting lid on profits ahead of planned IPO
Saudi Arabian Oil Co., the world's largest crude oil exporter, said Monday its net income hit $111 billion last year as it filed plans to issue debt, reawakening interest in its stalled initial public offering plan, set to be the biggest ever.
Profit climbed almost 50% from $75.9 billion in 2017, the Dhahran, Saudi Arabia-based company said in a prospectus filed Monday for a possible note offering. The debt sale by Saudi Aramco, as the company is known, could pave the way for an eventual IPO of its shares, which officials have said could happen in 2021.
Aramco's reshaping is part of Saudi Arabia's plan to diversify the economy from oil and attract foreign investment. In 2018, the company produced 13.6 million b/d of oil equivalent, with crude production accounting for one in every eight barrels pumped globally from 2016 to 2018, according to the prospectus.
Aramco is currently in talks with "various financial institutions" to borrow up to $10 billion, after the company said it had agreed to buy 70% of petrochemicals producer Saudi Basic Industries Corp. for $69.1 billion.
