Italy's Snam tests hydrogen and natural gas blend in network
Italy's gas operator Snam said Monday it has launched an experiment to introduce a 5% hydrogen and natural gas blend into the country's transmission network, the first of its kind in Europe.
The experiment is taking place in the province of Salerno in southern Italy and involves the supply of H2NG -- a blend of hydrogen and natural gas -- to two local industrial businesses: a pasta factory and a mineral water bottling company. Testing will last around one month.
The test paves the way to introduce green hydrogen, produced from renewable sources, into the gas system.
Hydrogen will become increasingly important in the company's strategy, Snam CEO Marco Alvera said.
