The EC will finance the construction of the pipeline Baltic Pipe in the amount of 200 million euros

Brussels, Neftegaz.RU. The European Commission (EC) will participate in the financing of the Baltic Pipe main gas pipeline (IHP), which Poland regards as one of the elements of its gas independence.

The IHP Baltic Pipe will run under the Baltic Sea and will deliver gas from fields on the Norwegian shelf to the North Sea to Poland through Denmark. The planned capacity of the gas pipeline is 10 billion m 3 , the length is 230 km. The Polish authorities intend to complete the construction by October 1, 2022.

The project is expensive, so Poland really needed financial support from the EU.Negotiations on the additional financing of the IHP Baltic Pipe project lasted 3 years and ended with the signing of an agreement on April 15, 2019. Polish Prime Minister M. Moravetsky clarified that part of the funds for the IHP construction of Baltic Pipe will be provided from European funds.

In June 2017, the heads of government of Poland and Denmark signed a memorandum on the construction of the IHP Baltic Pipe. The project cost is estimated at 1.7 billion euros, of which more than 50% will fall on the Polish Gaz-System. In November 2018, a final investment decision (FID) was made to finance the construction of the Baltic Pipe, and Gaz-System and the Danish Energinet finally agreed on the formalities. In January 2019, the EC decided to provide Gaz-System with financial assistance for the Baltic Pipe project as part of the Connecting Europe Facility project (CEF). The maximum allocated financial support is about 215 million euros. Baltic Pipe has already received 3 times financial support under the CEF in 2015, 2017 and 2018, but the amounts were even less significant.

IHP Baltic Pipe Poland regards as 1 of 3 key elements ensuring the country's energy independence after 2022 - the moment when the contract for the supply of Russian gas to Poland expires. 2 other ways - the growth of own gas production and an increase in imports of liquefied natural gas ( LNG ) through the LNG terminal in Swinoujscie and the planned LNG terminal in the area of Gdansk. At the same time, Poland has not yet decided on a contract for the supply of Russian gas after 2022. And if a couple of years ago Poland said that it did not want to conclude a long-term contract with Gazprom for the supply of LNG, then as it approaches 2022, statements become less categorical.
