Marathon Petroleum cancels Garyville coker project on bullish long-term heavy crude differentials
Marathon Petroleum canceled the construction of a new, third coker at its Garyville, Louisiana, refinery, driven by its long-term outlook for lower heavy crude production, CEO Gary Heminger said on Wednesday's first quarter results call.
Marathon had planned to add a third 50,000 b/d coker to the 94,500 b/d coking capacity already at the plant but canceled the project based on "our long-term outlook for heavy crude differentials," Heminger said.
"Geopolitical events have caused lower production of heavy crude," he added.
"In addition, more light crude is being produced as a result of continued US shale growth," Heminger said.
Changing market dynamics has shifted project return on investment so that it "no longer exceeds the 20% hurdle we typically use for refining projects," Heminger said.
"Our concerns over some policy changes around the world, that was a big supplier of heavy crude," he added. "And, therefore, it kind of leaves the Middle East producers as the swing producers to bring heavy into this market.
