OPEC, Allies Mulling Easing Oil Cuts at Jeddah Meeting -Sources
OPEC and its allies are set to debate a potential increase in crude output at a meeting in Saudi Arabia on Sunday, as they grapple balancing global oil supply amid tensions the Persian Gulf has not seen in over a decade.
The gathering between the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and a group of oil-producing allies led by Russia will commence nearly a week after two Saudi tankers were sabotaged in an incident.
As a compromise, OPEC is now considering a plan to allow countries the flexibility to pump more oil, as long as they remain within the boundaries of the December deal, said participants at this weekend's meeting. The Jeddah meeting will only gather delegates from a few key producers--including Saudi Arabia, Russia,or Nigeria--and won't make final decisions on output. The hot-point country won't be represent but its supply risk is expected to be widely scrutinized, the officials said.
As a result, the meeting could end with a set of recommendations for the second half of the year to be considered at a planned June summit in Vienna, OPEC officials say.
