Australia's Queensland state to invest $13 million in developing hydrogen industry
Australia's Queensland state government is investing millions of dollars into developing a hydrogen industry which it says could rival the success of LNG and see the region at the forefront of the sector.
The export potential is significant. Global demand for hydrogen is increasing, with the market expected to reach $155 billion by 2022, and much of that will be driven by Asia-Pacific markets, the minister for state development, manufacturing, infrastructure and planning Cameron Dick said Thursday. Japan, which is already a key export destination for Australian LNG -- is emerging as a major future user of hydrogen, with its vehicle industry having developed several hydrogen-powered cars, he said.
The government aims to spend A$19 million [$13.16 million] on its Queensland Hydrogen Industry Strategy 2019-2024, which will focus on supporting innovation, facilitating private investment, effective policy frameworks, building community awareness and assisting skills development.
Member for Gladstone Glenn Butch said the state's vision is to be at the forefront of renewable hydrogen production by 2030.
"Our state has all the pre-requisites needed to support a renewable hydrogen industry, including solar, wind and biomass, a pro-business government, existing gas pipeline infrastructure, and first-class export facilities," he said.
