EC approves Italy's Eur5.4 bil renewable power support scheme
The European Commission has approved Italy's plans to spend Eur5.4 billion ($6.1 billion) on supporting renewable power to 2021, saying this is in line with EU climate goals and state aid rules.
The scheme is to support 8 GW of new capacity, particularly photovoltaic, wind, hydropower and gas from waste, Italy's energy under-secretary Davide Crippa said late Friday after the approval.
It will involve a series of auctions to award 5.5 GW to wind and PV, 100 MW to small hydro and gas from waste (sewage gas), and 620 MW of repowering of existing plants from either of the first two categories.
The scheme is to help Italy meet its renewable energy targets, the EC said Friday.
These include a binding 2020 target to source 17% of its total final energy from renewables.
