Japan’s LNG imports decline again in May
Japanese imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) have declined again in May after a brief jump in April.
According to the provisional data released by Japan’s Ministry of Finance, a total of 5.56 million tons of the chilled fuel were imported into Japan during the month under review, 13.1 percent below the 6.4 mtpa imported in May 2018.
The value of May LNG imports was about $2.78 billion, sliding 13.7 percent on year.
The data shows that imports of US LNG slipped by 37.5 percent, reaching 131,000 tonnes. imports from Asian sources such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and Brunei dropped 3.2 percent compared to the corresponding month in 2018, reaching 1.37 million tonnes.
imports of liquefied natural gas from the Middle East reached 793,000 tonnes, 44.8 percent below the corresponding month in 2018. LNG imports from Russia reached 534,000 tonnes jumping 12.2 percent from May 2018.
The country’s coal imports for power generation dropped by 9.4 percent to 7.9 million tonnes, the data shows.
